Neighborhood Northern IJ Shores
Barbara on Northern IJ Shores
I love living in the Jordaan, but for space and fresh air, I often go with my dog to Stenen Hoofd—a former pier in the IJ. While she happily runs around, I often plop down on a weathered piece of concrete. From there, I look out over the water to the IJ bank on the other side, which always looks a little different.

Favorite spots
For me, especially the NDSM area feels like one of those energizing spots in Amsterdam. As soon as I step off the ferry, there’s liveliness: people rushing to board, boats gently rocking in the marina, Pllek with its cheerful mix of containers… and that endless, ever-moving IJ. Looking back at the city on the other side, it feels like being in a world of its own.
Time has transformed it quickly
Shipbuilding, rusty cranes, men in oil suits seem long gone. Artists and free spirits breathed new life into the old warehouses, once rough and abandoned, now full of color, creativity, and an edge that never fully disappears. Now, people live here happily. Modern buildings rise next to imposing offices, and the old warehouses—fortunately preserved—stand out even more.

Spots
The mix of raw character and grand plans makes this area exciting. The best part: spots where you can sit and enjoy it—feet in the sand at Pllek, a beer at Noorderlicht, or a meal in the industrial setting of IJver. And if possible, reserve at Helling 7: fantastic dining on an old ship slip. For inspiration, I visit the STRAATmuseum. NDSM is always a journey of discovery—raw, creative, but full of warmth and life.
