An area with a rich history along the beautiful Amstel… This is the best way to describe the exciting Overamstel area.

If you sail your boat slowly out of the busy city center, you drift along the banks of the Amstel. There, just past Amstel Station and opposite the Rivierenbuurt, you can see the contours of the renewed Overamstel area emerging.

At the foot of the historic water tower is the Amstelkwartier, with its long, green park along the water. There is also tHUis aan de Amstel, a wonderful place to relax—not just during a boat ride, but also after a run along the Amstel or a bike ride. This part of the city was once only accessible by boat, with a sandy path leading further. Later, it was the Zuidergasterrein. Now it’s a beautiful location with trendy cafés, water sports facilities, and stunning residential buildings, including many self-built homes.

Next to the Amstelkwartier is the Kauwgomballenkwartier. Its centerpiece and namesake is the former Maple Leaf candy factory, also known as the Bubble Gum Factory. It will soon become a pleasant place to live, as in KBF Dock. Peakz Padel already offers a modern padel facility with six indoor and two outdoor courts. Speaking of historical spots… the Weespertrekvaart and the Bijlmerbajes are some of Overamstel’s most well-known, sometimes notorious, sites. On the former prison site, people now live in comfortable apartments, and much self-built development has taken place along the Weespertrekvaart.

Overamstel really has it all: inside the ring, a stone’s throw from Amstel Station, and by boat, bike, or foot, the vibrant east, the beautiful Rivierenbuurt, and the city center are quickly accessible. All this while still being near water, greenery, and adjacent to the Amstelscheg nature and recreation area. The historic café is aptly named Thuis aan de Amstel!
